Free Mondays is a series of Monday-night free events at Kanneltalo. The events include gigs, author visits, films and sing-alongs. As the name suggests, no admission fee is collected for Free Mondays’ events that are open to all. Explore the events in further detail below and start your week with a dose of culture at Kanneltalo!

Juurilla

Jazz, blues, country, folk, rhythm and blues, bluegrass and Americana roots music are at the heart of this Monday-night favourite club. Artists who have performed at the Juurilla clubs over the years as visiting soloists include Erin, Jiri Nikkinen, Jussu Pöyhönen, Knucklebone Oscar, Susanna Haavisto, Jo’ Buddy, Nono Söderberg, Jonna Geagea, Matti Esko and Sonja Lumme. The Juurilla 10th anniversary concert was organised in autumn 2020 at Sitratori and featured performances by Jukka Gustavson and Pepe Ahlqvist.

Kino Kuutamo

In 2019, this film series, previously known as Klassikkoelokuva, was dubbed Kino Kuutamo in honour of Mondays, or ‘Moon’s days’. Kino Kuutamo invites you to be dazzled in the dark hall and get carried away by the moonlight!

Kino Kuutamo films are focused around seasonal themes. Themes from past seasons have included film adaptations of novels, award-winning Finnish films, powerful female characters, and diversity of sexuality and gender.

The film screenings are organised in cooperation with the Finnish Adult Education Centre, Helsinki, and PhD Harri Kilpi will introduce each film at a lecture starting at 17:00. After the lecture, we take a short break and the film will start at 18:00. You can also skip the lecture and just come and watch the film.

Author visits

Free Mondays’ author visits are organised in cooperation with Kannelmäki Library and the Finnish Adult Education Centre, Helsinki. Authors, who have visited us to talk about their works include Pajtim Statovci, Johanna Venho and Saara Turunen.

Let’s all sing together!

Nothing is more fun than singing – except singing together, that is! The singalong events at Kanneltalo café have a wonderful atmosphere and promote the sense of community. Mari Kätkä will lead the singing and the songs have been carefully selected from among evergreen favourite hits. Photo of Mari Kätkä: Kari Kohvakka.
